Geography games for kids: map skills and countries

These geography games for kids cover two things: reading maps, and getting to know real countries. Children learn to use a compass, a map key and grid references, find the continents and oceans, and see where a country lies, which countries border it and what its land looks like.

Map questions are answered on the map itself: children tap the place, the direction or the square they are asked for. Other levels are sorting, ordering and stepping-stone games. The games are made for ages 8 to 14.

  • Waymark Isles

    Ages 8–12 · 18 levels

Children become Wayfinders and win back the torn pieces of the Great Chart. Along the way they learn the four and then eight compass points, map symbols and keys, natural and built features, the continents and oceans, the equator and the poles, grid squares and coordinates, latitude and longitude, and map scale.

  • Country Explorer

    Ages 8–14 · 10 levels

One game for each of 10 countries. Every country has 10 levels on the same themes: where it is in the world, its neighbours, its capital and biggest cities, its flag, its size and population, mountains and rivers, language and money, and the capitals of its neighbours. Children can also choose their own home country, and comparison questions then include it.

How levels work, and what is free

Every game is a trail of levels that get harder as they go. Each level has its own guardian, and every right answer wears it down. Fast answers earn bonus points, but only accuracy counts for the rest: up to three stars show how many answers were right, and the next level opens once at least 60% of the answers in the one before it were right.

Levels 1 and 2 of every game can be played straight away, with no account. Levels 3 and 4 need a free account. From level 5 on, levels are part of the subscription. The games run in the browser on phones, tablets and computers, with nothing to install.

Questions parents ask

Which countries can my child explore?

Right now: Australia, Azerbaijan, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Spain, United Kingdom, and United States. Each country is its own game with its own levels, and more countries can be added over time.

Where should my child start?

With Waymark Isles if reading a map is new: it begins with the four compass points and a map key. Children who can already read a map can start with any country in Country Explorer, for example the one they live in or one they are learning about at school.

Which map skills do the games practise?

Waymark Isles covers compass directions, map symbols and keys, natural and built features, continents and oceans, grid references, latitude and longitude, and scale. Country Explorer then uses those skills on real countries.

Are the geography games free?

Levels 1 and 2 of every geography game are free without an account, and levels 3 and 4 are free with an account. From level 5 on, levels are part of the subscription.

What is the home country for?

In Country Explorer, children can pick the country they live in. Questions that compare countries, for example by size or population, then put the country they are exploring next to their own.
